🌟 This Week's Top Insight: Your Aging Blood Vessels' Secret Ally: The Gut Connection
Did you know that the secret to keeping your blood vessels young might be hiding in your gut? Scientists have just uncovered an unexpected connection that make us rethink about cardiovascular health—and it starts with the bacteria living in the colon.
Our blood vessels are lined with endothelial cells—tiny but mighty gatekeepers that regulate blood flow and keep inflammation in check. As we age, these cells can enter a “zombie-like” state called senescence, triggering inflammation and setting the stage for cardiovascular disease. A groundbreaking study published in Nature Aging this May revealed that phenylacetic acid (PAA), a metabolite made by certain ‘bad’ gut bacteria from the amino acid phenylalanine, increases with age in plasma in both mice and humans. PAA induces endothelial senescence and accelerates blood vessel aging. The interesting part? When researchers gave aging mice sodium acetate, it significantly reversed the damage.
What does it mean to us:
Our small intestine is built to absorb almost all phenylalanine very well (with minor genetic differences), so that little free phenylalanine can reach the colon to serve as meals for bacteria to make PAA. However, when we load big protein meals without any fiber, a surplus of phenylalanine passes down into the colon, where certain ‘bad’ bacteria (i.e. Clostridium species) can make PAA from it.
So, should we start loading up on salt-and-vinegar chips or acetate supplements to reverse the damage? 😉 While sodium acetate is technically safe in food-grade amounts, large supplemental doses also raise sodium intake, which cause high blood pressure. Also, we don’t yet have any human trials confirming that acetate supplements slow aging. So instead of reaching for pills or sodium-heavy snacks, we can boost body's natural acetate production through smarter eating.
💪 Action of the Week: Smart Eating Habits for Healthier Blood Vessels
✅ Grilling a steak or enjoying BBQ? Add a fiber-rich side like chilled potato salad 🥗 (Check out the recipe below) to prevent phenylalanine overflow.
✅ Feed your gut bacteria to brew more protective acetate for you: e.g., oats, lentils, chickpea, black beans, green bananas, cooled rice or potatoes and fermented food like sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, kombucha, or natto.
✅A splash of vinegar (either apple-cider, rice, red-wine, or balsamic) in salad dressing or drinking water to add a direct boost of natural acetic acid. Check out this article for how to add them to your daily routine.
